Historic Hampton Tea Dance
By Holly Buchanan
Love did indeed win last Saturday as the rain held off and everyone celebrated at the Empire State Pride Agenda Hampton’s Tea Dance. This year party goers had a lot to celebrate with the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same sex marriage.
Nathan Schaefer, Executive Director of Empire State Pride Agenda talked about the huge win. “It was a watershed moment. I cried for about 24 hours. But there’s still so much work to do.”
Current ESPA priorities include transgender rights, health issues and gay youth. Nathan shared that 40% percent of all homeless and runaway youth are LGBT.
“Another priority is to outlaw conversion therapy which is still legal in New York,” said Schaefer.
So, lots of work still to be done, but for one evening everyone had the chance to come together for what has always been one of the best parties of the summer. Party goers were festive, the music kept the dance floor packed the entire time and DJ Lady Bunny was her regal self.
I always comment every year that I do not think Lady Bunny’s hair can get any bigger. Do you remember the famous scene from Jaws where the boat captain, after seeing the shark, deadpans, “I think we’re gonna need a bigger boat”? Well, I think we’re gonna need a bigger tent. Nuf said
