Not even the threat of rain could affect the size of the crowd or DJ Lady Bunny’s hair at the Empire State Pride Agenda’s Hamptons Tea Dance.

There was a lot to celebrate this year with two victories in the Supreme Court, including the defeat of DOMA.   The plaintiff in that case, Edie Windsor, put in an appearance at the event was a huge crowd favorite.

Nathan Schaefer the Executive Director of the Empire State Pride Agenda commented, “It’s been a historic time for the LGBT community.  The Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act which is huge, and I can’t tell you how overjoyed we are with the progress that we’ve seen in recent years.  New York State became the sixth and largest state where same sex marriage is legal two years ago and since then you’ve seen an outpouring of support from across the country and now there are twelve states where it’s legal.  Now with DOMA being struck down we can benefit from the federal government recognizing our marriages as well.  It’s such a great time to come out and celebrate with the community today.”

Christine Quinn was on also on hand meeting, greeting, and no doubt hoping to secure votes for her upcoming bid for Mayor of New York.

But the biggest name at this year’s Tea Dance was someone who, for the first time, was not in attendance.  The event was dedicated to MJ Vineburgh who passed away earlier this year.  MJ was always a vital part of the event and the community.  She was described as being “the hub of a wheel with wonderful spokes all around her.  But she was always the hub, the center.”  And in a true tribute that proves dancing shoes live on, her partner Laurie Hall sported MJ’s signature converse sneakers.

Nathan Schaefer noted, “MJ was a fun loving spirit that always lit up the room, the crowd, the field.  She was a joyous presence. And when everyone heard we were dedicating the event to her they were overjoyed to honor and to recognize this longstanding supporter and real leader of this community.”

We miss you MJ.

As always, the dance floor was packed from the opening “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” (Lady Bunny has a sense of humor) to Donna Summer’s “Last Dance.”   Once again The Hamptons Tea Dance lived up to its reputation as one of the best parties of the summer.

One of the best part of the events is the meeting of new and old friends.  It’s like a great family reunion without the tuna casserole.
