Hidden away off Town Lane in Amagansett is your Hamptons horseback riding heaven.  If you’ve been dying to take a riding lesson or have your child atop an adorable pony, Stony Hill Stables is your answer.  Open to the public, the five decade old Hamptons horse farm opens its stall doors to anyone interested in learning horsemanship.  Says Founding Board Member of the new Stony Hill Stables Foundation Maureen Bluedorn, “It’s a labor of love to stay in business.  It’s like farming where it is a part of a family history.  People comment on their first time here how beautiful it is, to be outside in this natural environment.  Even the parents love to come and absorb the atmosphere while their children ride.”

In a commitment to make the sport of kings affordable to everyone, Stony Hill Stables has also created the Stony Hill Stables Foundation which will be offering full equitation scholarships to local residents (for info on how to apply www.stonyhillstables.net.)  Maureen explains, “We want to keep the girl next door coming here.  We’re dedicated to keeping locals involved and when someone has potential to be able to keep opportunities open.”  They will be kicking off the Foundation with a Benefit Cocktail Party on Saturday June 30th from 6 – 8pm with a special Dressage Exhibition and Pony Drill Team Performance.

Second generation owner and USDF silver medalist in dressage Wick Hotchkiss trains some of the top equestrian athletes but also feels the need to encourage those with less means to participate.  Hotchkiss comments, “It’s been my life long dream to be able to make the equestrian experience more accessible in our community.”

The trainers at Stony Hill Stables are skilled in equitation, hunters, jumpers and dressage.  Whether you are a beginner or advanced student they offer everything from single lessons to horse and pony leases as well as stabling for your own fine steed.

Riders can start as young as four years old and find a community at Stony Hill through their summer camps or group lessons.  “We’re all about teamwork here,” Maureen states, “We want to increase everyone’s confidence and instill good sportsmanship.”  Unlike some show barns, Stony Hill wants to keep the all-for-one and one-for-all attitude going.  A mother watching her daughter ride commented, “We live in DC in the winter, and I wish we could transplant the farm there.  The level of professionalism is amazing here and even in a half hour lesson my daughter can learn so many things.”

In the age of smart phones, games, iPods, and all things technological, Hamptons horseback riding offers kids and adults a chance to decompress and enjoy an amazing animal and nature.  Luckily so far no one has invented the iPony.
