Rockin’ Resort Wear – Island Company Lands In East Hampton

Don’t trend on me!  Founder Spencer Antle is the anti-fashionista who doesn’t adhere to following trends but instead remains true to his classical instincts for his successful resort wear line Island Company.   Don’t let the Nantucket-red baseball cap fool you, this casual dude is ruling a growing world-wide fashion line which just landed this season with a flagship boutique in East Hampton at 66 Newtown Lane.

While they have sold the line through high end resorts, top boutiques and 5 other Island Company stores, Spencer took the plunge into the East Hampton Island Company this spring.  “It’s a cool vibe that I like here, eclectic and international and it felt right,” he reports. 

The Island Company fashion line includes bathing suits, casual wear, and accessories as well as sun products for women, men, and kids.  It’s classic but with a sexy twist that lets you know it’s okay to be naughty at the country club.

You’ll see his designs on celebrities including Jewel, Johnny Depp, Rebecca Romijn, Jenny McCarthy and Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx.

For Island Company whether it’s life imitating design or design that is imitating life, you want in on it.

Their motto graces T Shirts, tumblers, and the staff that makes it all happen.  No man can be an island, company or not, and he credits his team for their indomitable spirit.

“I’ve never been a person who wanted to wear a suit to work,” admits Spencer, “Our casual Friday is about bikinis and flip flops with jello shots. It’s a lifestyle that gets you in a lot of trouble,” he adds with a smile.

Spencer doesn’t want to win the popularity contest.  As a matter of fact if something seems really popular they pull it — a blessing to a woman who doesn’t want to show up with three other (god forbid skinnier) girls in the same outfit.

When asked about his artistic process he replies, “There’s no design process at all – it starts with me and a timeline realizing I have to design the line and I get forced into it.  It’s not I’m feeling ‘coral.’  My art department is working on ideas of things I see and pictures I’ve take and it all gets merged right there – the entire line is designed in about two weeks.”

Clearly it works.  Named by Inc. Magazine as one of the top 500 growing companies in the USA with over 400 wholesale outlets, 6 stores, and  multiple offers to open new stores around the globe not to mention a new line of hand-made Italian eyewear coming out, Spencer won’t be quitting his job any time soon (rule number one of the motto).  Love and a tan and lots of plane tickets, however, are a distinct possibility.
