A star studded creative brain trust gathered under the tents at the East Hampton Library for Authors Night which not only raised money for our hallowed literary ground, it proved the see and be seen sophisticated social spot for a Hamptons Saturday night.   While we may know them through their words, there is nothing like meeting your favorite authors in person and having a tete a tete.  For the younget set, it would be like if the entire cast of Gossip Girl showing up at one party.

As a relationship columnist, meeting Candace Bushnell was a thrill.  I asked if she missed writing a column and she said it had been about eight years since the famed Sex And The City and that her goal was to write books.  I still think she could turn those Fifth Avenue females on their Ferragamo heels if she went back to it.

I also had the chance to talk with Poet Laureate Billy Collins who explained the almost junior high school dance-like quality where people would come by, pick up his book of poetry and shrug, put it down, and walk away.  I was proud to be his first purchaser as I am a fan of a man who can be funny and poignant in so few words.  I bet he’d be great on Twitter.  His newest assignment was to continue a little known literary tradition where authors honor their recently deceased brethren, in this case the amazing Frank McCourt, with a proper graveside joke.  Now there is a writing assignment.

Another party goes described the event like speed dating, with quick glances and assessments of all the different authors and their books then deciding whose to actually purchase.  When you had to choose between Alec Baldwin and Jay McInerney and Nelson DeMille, Dava Sobel, A.M. Homes, Robert A. Caro, Steven Gaines, Philip Galanes, Jill A. Davis, Tom Clavin, Eric Ficshl, and Dava Sobel, it was had to make a commitment who to stalk.

The array was staggering with books which could tell you everything from How Not To Look Old, to How to Get Over Jet Lag, to How To Make Love To The Same Person For The Rest Of Your Life.  You could learn about decorating, food, wine, or even ghosts in the Hamptons.  The trick was to balance all your books and glass of wine at the same time.

Patrons then got to go to private dinner parties with their favorite authors with amazing hosts including Judith and Rudi Giuliani and Kathie Russo Gray.

If you didn’t get there go to www.authorsnight.org and get the best summer reading list you could possibly find.  Kindle it if you must – but read.  Then next time you get to be the smartest person in the tent.
